For a petite woman, I can be pretty formidable if a man grabs me. I have done some damage to dudes half this guy’s age. But he went directly into magic mode. Before I could so much as stomp on his foot, I was paralyzed with the sensation of rope wrapped all around me.

Then, I was levitating. I floated in a horizontal position down the hallway and up the stairs. The wizard walked behind me like a balloon handler at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

“Your husband has been naughty and ran away,” the wizard said. “But your visit won’t be in vain. I’ll find him and bring him back here. And he’ll never leave my side again.”

A bedroom door upstairs opened on its own accord, and I drifted inside. When I was above a narrow bed, I dropped, bounced on the mattress, crashed into the wall, and ended up lying on the bed, still bound by the invisible magic rope.

“Whoa, not a chick I’d expect to find here,” said a familiar male voice.

Arch Mage Bob sat on a wooden chair at a small desk.

I strained my neck to look at him.

“Can you help me out here?” I asked.

“Yeah, yeah.” He got up and grabbed my shoulders and legs, straightening me upon the bed so I wouldn’t be in pain. As someone about to leave middle age behind, he sympathized with my recalcitrant body.

“How did you get here?” he asked.

“Same way you did, I guess. The In Between?”

“Yup.”

“Did you come willingly?”

“Nope,” Bob said. “He kidnapped me.”

I wasn’t sure if I believed him, but I’d accept him at his word for now.

“Okay. Give me a few moments for a mental-health break,” I said.

I sent out a telepathic message to Missy. She, like Cory, did not have telepathy, but an urgent message from me should be able to appear in her head.

Missy, I’m okay for the time being. Block yourself so he doesn’t sense your magick.

I did.

Good. Now try to stay hidden and safe. At some point, I’m sure he’ll leave, and I’ll need you to help us escape.

Us? Did you find Cory?

Sadly, no. I found Arch Mage Bob.

Yuck.

Yuck was the last word I heard from her for a while.
